Fender Electric Guitars
Fender electric guitars have been the instrument of choice for artists, bands and performers around the world due to their iconic looks, multi-level price points and most importantly, famous sound.
Fender has been making electric guitars for many years and has been at the forefront of guitar design since the introduction of the Telecaster in 1952.
The Telecaster has a single-cutaway and a pair of single-coil pickups, known for delivering the classic ‘Tele twang’. The Telecaster has been famously played by Keith Richards, Jeff Buckley and Bruce Springsteen.
The legendary Stratocaster was released in 1954 and was followed by other models such as the Jaguar, Jazzmaster and Mustang. Over the years the models have retained many of their original features, a testament to their design by company founder Leo Fender. The double-cutaway and contoured body for easy playing, and typically feature an SSS pickup configuration that delivers bright, crisp, articulate tones. The Strat is played by the likes of David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton, among many others.
As well as changing the guitar world forever with the Strat and Tele, Fender continued to innovate and pioneer the electric guitar market. Popularly known as Offset Models, these guitars offer unique body shapes, more obscure features and alternative tonal capabilities.
The first of the Fender Offsets was the Duo-Sonic, first introduced in 1956 with a short-scale design, making it perfect for students and beginners.
Just two years later in 1956, Fender released the first professional standard Offset, The Jazzmaster. Originally made for jazz guitarists, it typically came with a pair of soap bar single-coil pickups, delivering a warm, rounded ‘jazzy’ sound. Over the years the Jazzmaster became extremely popular with surf rock, indie rock and grunge musicians. It's even used by the likes of Elvis Costello, Johnny Marr, and Thurston Moore.
The Jaguar and Mustang were then added to the Offset range in the '60s, which have a similar shape to the Jazzmaster. Where they differ is the inclusion of short-scale 24" necks (vs 25.5" on the Jazzmaster) and have exposed single-coil or humbucking pickups.
One of the most famous Fender Offsets is the Jag-Stang. Kurt Cobain designed the Jag-Stang with the Fender Custom Shop in 1993 to create a hybrid that combines Kurt’s favourite parts of both the Jaguar and the Mustang electric guitars.
